Apple vs Android: Show me innovation!

“We are seeing the explosive growth of Android devices, and competitors prefer to respond to this with litigation cannot respond with innovation, ”said Eric Schmidt at Google Mobile Revolution in Tokyo. What caused the monstrous bathert among Apple fans. How can it be that Apple can't respond to anything truly innovative and prefers to troll Android manufacturers with patents 5 years ago? Do not you say! Or maybe?

Let me remind you that the International Trade Commission (ITC) pleaded guilty to HTC in violation of two patents by Apple. If it goes further, then ITC can satisfy Apple’s request and prohibit the import of certain HTC products to the United States. Serious problem, right? And if we take into account the fact that the patents are quite universal and many Android manufacturers fall under the scope, the ostentatious sharpness of Schmidt becomes clear. He simply could not say otherwise, because you need to keep an answer in the face of the public and shareholders. Or maybe he is just right?

According to AllThingsD, HTC’s fault lies in the plane of patent infringement: “A real-time signal ”.

If you look in detail, the first patent was issued in 1996 and describes the client-server architecture, the main task of which is the response of the system to the input of user data. This patent is so general that any implementation of an interactive user interface may fall under its jurisdiction.

The second patent was issued back in 1994 and describes the principles of isochronous data processing that comes from external devices. For example, the patent describes the principle of processing messages from a modem, voice data coming from a radio transceiver, etc. Such data processing methods have been used in computer systems for a very long time. Look at the webcam in your laptop, it also uses the isochronous method of transferring data via USB-bus.

As you can see, such ancient patents describe completely ordinary things, many of which have become standard in modern operating systems and other software and hardware complexes. The true intention of Apple, too, lies on the surface and this is by no means the protection of innovative bleeding edge technologies in its products. This is the most patent trolling that aims to make Android less attractive to vendors and weaken its market position. No wonder, if any Android manufacturer will unbuckle $ 5- $ 10 Apple when using the “free” Android, you know what kind of lost profit will result in this amount for millions of copies of devices.

At the same time, is Apple an innovative company? Slippery question. And yet I agree with Schmidt. Apple is a master of implementation. They pick up ideas, trends and technological developments soaring in the air, competently implement and package them into a finished product. Apple regularly comes up with various nice little things about user interfaces that can cause a real wow-effect and delight users. Also, Apple is constantly improving in the area of processing and applying various materials, but Apple is not a technological innovator, including Intel, Qualcomm, Motorola, the deceased Nortel, Nokia (do not laugh! :).

So right Schmidt, or wrong?
