Debian + SFLC = FAQ

On the eighth, a very interesting document was published on the website of the Debian project - “The Patent Policy FAQ for Free Software Distribution Communities”

The material was prepared by Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) lawyers at the request and with the assistance of the Debian project. This FAQ, of course, is not a full-fledged legal advice, but gives an idea of working with software patents and is designed primarily for volunteer communities acting on a voluntary basis, without the participation of any commercial organizations.

The Debian project maintains a critical position with regard to software patents: “we believe that patenting is a threat to open source software and hampers the progress of software development in general”.

At the same time, given the current situation in some countries, developers and distributors of open source software should not underestimate (as well as exaggerate) the importance of working on patent issues.

“The FUD patent is a serious problem, as is the risk of patent aggression against open source software,” says Eben Moglen, the founding director of the Legal Center for Freedom Software. “SFLC is pleased to work with Debian to help volunteer communities understand real problems and find real solutions without suffering from doubt and uncertainty.”
