The work of the Ural physicists on spintronics in Physical Review Letters

Theoretical physics is one of the few scientific disciplines where Russian scientists are still at the forefront of world science. July 1, in the prestigious scientific journal Physical Review Letters , the work Tuning Magnetotransport through a Magnetic Kink Crystal in a Chiral Helimagnet (Management of Electronic Transport through a Magnetic Crystal in a Chiral Helimagnet) was published.

The authors are two teachers of the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Institute of Natural Sciences (IEN) of the Ural Federal University Alexander Ovchinnikov and Igor Proskurin, as well as their Japanese colleague, Professor of the Kyushu Institute of Technology Junichiro Kishine.

“Our scientists rarely appear in such high-rated physical journals,” said Alexey Babushkin, dean of the Faculty of Physics, Institute of Physics and Mathematics, in a press release from UrFU , “each of these publications is an event of perhaps a nationwide scale.

Spintronics is a section of quantum electronics that studies spin current transfer. This is a key technology needed to create a whole range of new generation devices: for example, solid-state batteries without chemical reactions, spin transistors, nonvolatile track memory , etc.

The main finding of Russian researchers, Alexander Ovchinnikov reported, was the detection of anomalies, when the resistance of the internal magnetic structure of the material (magnetoresistance) for certain values of the magnetic field increases dramatically. The number of such anomalies is infinitely large.

This effect can be used in the production of hard disks, because the work of the GMR head in the HDD is based precisely on the mechanism for changing the electrical resistance of magnetic materials in an external magnetic field. Therefore, the work and caused such interest. The Japanese newspaper Nikkei even wrote that "a new study opens the way to the virtually unlimited capacity of computer hard drives."
