Google will finance the Internet Institute in Berlin

“How has the Internet changed society, science, politics and economics? “- An independent Internet and society research institute (Forschungsinstitut für Internet und Gesellschaft) is going to work on this controversial issue, which will be a division of Humboldt University .



The main directions of the institute's work will be innovations on the Internet, philosophy of law and constitutional law in the digital age, and media politics in the modern world. Great importance will be given to the dialogue between science, politics, civil society and privacy issues.



It is noteworthy that one of the sponsors of the creation of the Internet Institute is Google, which in three years will provide the institute with 4.5 million euros, and will also be engaged in attracting new partners during advertising campaigns.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, in connection with the opening of the Institute, said:

The new institute will be completely independent of Google [...]. We are witnessing a new era - the era of the Internet. The institute will work to describe the changes associated with the development of this revolutionary technology.




The official opening of the Internet Institute and the society is scheduled for the end of October 2011. To begin the study and for the founding partners on this issue, an international symposium will be held in Berlin.
