Botnet Dangerous for iPhone Buyers Found

Employees of the Panda Software laboratory have discovered a utility used by cybercriminals to redirect users to a page that simulates the official iPhone website and is designed to steal money. Cyber criminals used a botnet to control more than 7,500 computers infected with the Aifone.A Trojan.

The utility detected by PandaLabs contains a number of functions that allow cyber-criminals to redirect infected computer users to fake webpages disguised as the official iPhone website. As a result, if a user tries to acquire a phone from a fake web page, in fact he himself transfers his confidential data to the hands of cyber criminals. Among the functions of the utility, there are also redirection of users to fake pages (Redirect Admin) and delivery of fake search results (Search Redir) and even a way to place pop-up ads and iPhone banners (Popups Admin and Banner Admin) on an infected computer.

According to Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs, “this is one of the most ingenious attacks aimed at a particular community of users, in this case: iPhone users. This is really a complicated, dangerous attack that combines elements of malware (trojan), phishing (fake web page) and even adware (pop-up windows, editing search results, etc.). ”

If we take into account the demand for the iPhone, generated by Apple’s wonderfully promoted marketing machine, then it would be strange to have no “perturbation” on the part of fraudsters. I believe that such advanced criminal "events" are just the beginning. In the future, we can expect that not only Steve Jobs' company, but also numerous network criminals will earn on millions of “iPhone phonards”.
