Nokia explains why major manufacturers have not created a "solar" mobile phone

Indeed, despite the fact that solar panels are already being built into everything, even TVs and air conditioners (there are such concepts and actually working devices), there are no solar cell phones yet. There are isolated examples, individual models, mainly Chinese comrades (plus Samsung and LG produced “solar” cell phones, for testing), but this technology has not gained popularity. There are many reasons for this, and Nokia covers some of them.

In general, the reasons given by Nokia are quite understandable. First, it is a large amount of energy consumed by a cell phone. Even if it is in sleep mode, so to speak, the phone consumes thousands of times more energy than the same radio with solar batteries or there is a clock. It is understandable, because all these wireless modules, GSM and CDMA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, all this consumes a lot of energy. The phone is constantly looking for a network, constantly "communicating" with the cellular tower.

In general, if you take only the "solar" phone, which has no other access to energy, except for the solar battery, then you will have to use it at a minimum. In addition, such devices should spend the maximum amount of time in the sun. Few would agree to buy such a cell phone, which is almost impossible to use, right?

Among other things, solar panels are still quite expensive, especially in comparison with other types of charging. People who are willing to pay money for a premium phone are not ready to receive in response a device whose functionality has been significantly reduced. And of course, the smaller the solar panel built into the cell phone, the less energy the device will receive, with all the consequences.

But all this, according to the guys from Nokia, is still a surmountable obstacle, and such a cell phone can be a useful tool for developing countries. The company even released a prototype of the “solar” mobile, calling it “Lokki”. This phone is depicted in the announcement picture. If the project is successful, the "solar" phones will become a reality.
