Specialists from MIT have developed a mobile accessory for the diagnosis of cataracts

Earlier on Habré there was already news about various accessories for mobile devices that help to diagnose blood, early diagnose cancer and perform other medical tasks. At this time, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed an accessory for a smartphone that helps to quickly diagnose cataracts.

The device is called Catra, and can connect to many mobile phones, as well as to iPod. Catra scans the lens, determining the size, position, shape and density. All these characteristics allow detecting cataracts and determining the degree of development of this disease. The device developer, Ramesh Raskar, says that he likes to think of the device as a radar for the eye.

It is worth noting that the device is able to detect cataracts at the earliest stages, even before the lens begins to change, becoming opaque. Thus, treatment can begin early, and the likelihood of recovery is very high. The developers believe that this device can be a good help for doctors, especially in developing countries.

With the massive introduction in hospitals, the device will help reduce the number of cases of blindness caused by diseases such as cataracts. By the way, earlier these same developers have created specialized software for mobile phones, which allows diagnostics of the entire eyeball.

Now, if there are more such devices, and in general access, it would be possible to carry out diagnostics at home, turning to doctors already with a ready diagnosis.
