Suicide analysis of usability "Habrahabra"

The anniversary "Habrahabra" is dedicated.

Introduction

This opus discusses some points regarding usability of our beloved “Habrahabra”. The review affects many sections of the site. Of course, I tried to avoid very controversial moments. Habrahabr is almost perfect, so let's make it even better! Without further ado, look what happened, let's start with the minuses.

Minuses

Index numbering

The biggest disadvantage is the numbering of pages with post titles: the oldest page of posts should have the number 1, and with the most recent posts - the maximum number. While browsing and opening in the new tabs of the article, reading them, in the meantime new posts are added, and the page number with the headings is already changing, and it turns out not very nice.

Looping

The logo on the main page is a link to the main page. It has long been known that references to themselves are harmful. Besides, it is confusing. This also applies to the PDA version .

Non-obvious search

There is a separate search for posts, questions and answers, blogs, etc., but on the search page there is no possibility to specify the scope of the search. Immediately you can not guess that such a possibility actually is - there is in each of the relevant sections.
Search by sections is not obvious, but it is!

Readability

Habrahabr is, first of all, a resource for reading. However, a regular means of increasing or decreasing the font was not found. At the moment, you can be content with only the means of browsers. In addition, Sans serif is not the best font solution for text articles. Look and compare the readability and reduction of eye strain with slightly increased font.

Ctrl and "+" bypasses the problem with small print

Terms: beautiful but incomprehensible

In the question and answer section (“q & a”) there are three subsections: “Hiked”, “New” and “Worn”. What does it mean - "zahabrennye" and "otkhabrennye"? A tooltip here would not hurt. Comparing the ratings of the contents of these two subsections, of course, you can understand, but you need to spend time on this.
Zahabr ... what?

Sort Members

In the general list of the "People" section, sorting is by rating only. What about karma? And alphabetically? And in chronological order? In the lists by city - obviously, sorting by registration date was done. And why is the main list not sorted by date of registration? Why are the lists by city not sorted by rating? ..
And why did they choose this sorting? ..

pros

Now - about the pros: a) of which there are more, b) they are much fatter than the deadly minuses listed above.

Design and layout

Minimalistic design and a good layout of the site, plus enough empty space, you do not feel like in the market when there are a lot of people.

m.habrahabr.ru

A huge plus is an adequate mobile version.

Comments

All comments on one page. If comments were broken page by page (and there are sites where articles are broken page by page), it would probably be not so interesting to read discussions about posts.

Right column

Links to the new and the best in the column on the right, as well as many other things that appear there, are very well thought out.

URL

The abbreviated URL habr.ru is a great idea.

Ideal 404th page

The 404th page does not contain anything superfluous (plus is rather pretty), and the wrong URL entered in the address bar can be easily corrected. I typed habrahabr.ru/bloglists , and the address has not changed to something like habrahabr.ru/404 , which is very nice.

Ideal 404th page

Contacts

Contact information is clearly described on the page about the site .

Links

Transparent link structure. For example, only a glance at http://habrahabr.ru/qa/popular makes it clear that this is a link to popular questions and answers in the appropriate section.

Advertising

The site has little advertising, and it is unobtrusive.

Not pros and cons

Two points, described below, do not pull on the "minuses", because the flow of affairs does not interfere much, but unjustifiably take up space or hurt the eyes.

Tags

It is not clear why on the page with the post title you need tags (in the list of posts). At the end of the article itself - why not. Tags allow you to quickly estimate what the article? It is unlikely that the content before the “habrakata” fully fulfills this function.
Tags are useless

Big and small

The policy regarding capital letters in the menu of a different level is not completely clear. In the main menu we see: “posts”, “q & a”, “blogs”, “people” and “companies”. We go to any post and see: "Hiked", "New", "Wit."
So with a big or small?

Summary

Even with all of these - no, not flaws - rough edges, “Habrahabr” is very well thought out and made. A huge audience and high quality materials - the success of the project can only be envied. I sincerely hope that "Habrahabr" will only get better over time.
