Shortly after the announcement in the
corporate blog Yota devices
One and
Many , devices fell into my hands.
Boomburum overtook me a bit with a review - at the time I was just finishing digging into the guts of Many.

In this review: look inside, disassembling guide and speed test * with gadgets *.

Worklog
What you see before the kata is the only thing that I managed to do with the monolithic-looking Many, and that, with the help of the Pingi
watch .
I spit the device like a wolf in a famous joke and did not know how to approach it. After that, the son invited me under the table in the kitchen, we examined him together, and came to the conclusion that this was not a telephone (although he said alo-alo in it).

The “brazen face” picture that I borrowed from Burum especially annoyed me, and it turned out that this is the key, The Keeeeey, as Agent Smith said.
If you remove the switch to the position when the smile is not visible, a gap appears that allows you to remove the end cap using the lever method:

After that, the content is moved out of the case, and then to the prepared person everything is intuitively clear.

On the left is the plastic cover of the PCB, in the middle is a cable with LEDs that highlight the main logo and make up the end information line. On the right is the wrong side of the USB-microUSB connector (which was completely unnecessary to disassemble).

You see a completely disassembled device.
Pay attention to two mini-coaxial connectors, the first one for Wimax, the second one for Wi-Fi.
It looks very simple, but always when comparing devices of different generations:

picture from my article with the epigraph Ab ovo usque ad mala
SOC of the new generation allowed to simplify the PCB to the maximum, just think, before there were two of them at all!
Heart device close-up:

Well, since there were mini-coaxial connectors inside, I can't help but connect to them, taking a pair from my strategic stock of pigtails.

I did not even try to fasten the connectors on the case, I even had to rehear a hole in the case for cables. Very much it is beautiful, and not even afraid of the word - absolutely.

To answer later the question, which of them is WiMax, which Wi-Fi, I marked it first with varnish of my spouse:

I categorically do not recommend this “spare part” to be taken out during analysis, to be inserted back, so that at least something shines I did not succeed. Cursing my curvature, I reassured myself that without any extra illumination I would get extra minutes of uptime. So this cute accessory remained in my memory, maybe for the new year I will “light it up”.

What gave the transition to a new platform
Ignoring R & D costs, Many are undoubtedly cheaper to produce than Egg.
New solutions in low power design allowed (with a decrease in battery capacity from 2800mAh to 1500 mAh) significantly increase battery life.
Speed
I started downloading the Ubuntu distribution at a speed of> 800kB per second, which is almost laboratory speed. External antennas could not increase it, only the signal-to-noise ratio improved.
The next day, in a busy office, I tested Many in combat.
Since Yota Many is equipped with an integrated antenna with a modest (2-3 dBi) and a good amplifier (23 dBm), I tried the TRENDnet antenna as my champion in receiving Wimax from compact Wi-Fi antennas, as I wrote in the article
“Testing antennas Wi-Fi for receiving WiMax »antenna | speed | CINR / RSSI |
---|
internal | 5 Mbit | 19dB / -68dBm |
TRENDnet TEW-AI750 | 9.5! Mbps | 22dB / -62dBm |
Feasibility
Of course, looking inside and satisfying interest is in itself an ample reason for this. However, let's not forget that Egg is removed from production, and perhaps someone outside the city, a few dB will not be superfluous.
Traditional Disclaimer
The author does not call for self-modification of Yota devices. Many, when used as intended, the device is perfect. Such actions lead
to the development of fine motor skills, intelligence, and increased self-esteem can lead to equipment failure, injuries of varying degrees of severity, and clearly deprive the manufacturer’s warranty. Attempts to repeat them are done at your own peril and risk.
Neither pigtails nor external antenna are included.
PS It can be assumed that the manufacturer decides after viewing this review, it is possible to glue the devices so that they cannot be opened so easily.
