Baldur's Gate on Android: GemRB emulator in action
Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice !!!
Optional personal preface
At the turn of the century, all progressive mankind with might and main cut through the Sword Coast: from Candlekeep to the very Gate of Baldur. And I - I played the right midfielder in the yard team and my percentage was 386, and the monitor was black and white. He joined the art of role-playing games only after 9 years. And the legendary Baldur's Gate did not obey me. Mouse can not turn the camera - uncomfortable! ..
So I would have lived, ashamed of my pops, if it were not good people - the creators of GemRB , a free open source implementation of Bioware Infinity Engine. ')
Materiel
Through the efforts of the St. Petersburg developer Dmitry Matveyev aka Beholder GemRB is ported to Android. Allows you to run games in the Baldur's Gate series, as well as - with some limitations - Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment . Requires:
Android> = 1.6;
VGA, WVGA, HVGA or higher resolution;
150 MB RAM;
availability of resources of the original game and space for them on a smartphone / tablet.
Installation
We download the emulator from the Android Market ( QR code ) and install it.
We get the game itself (on Rutreker there is an excellent assembly of the Baldur Gate Trilogy - graphics from BG2 + continuous plot (!) Of the whole series ... but there is also an opinion that not everyone is so rosy with it. They recommend using this one ). On my device I ate 5.2 gig in the prescribed form.
On the smartphone, open the folder app-data / net.sourceforge.gemrb and rename GemRB.cfg.sample to GemRB.cfg
(If you wish) we edit GemRB.cfg - its instructions are “inside” in a commented form.
Copy all files from the folder with the game installed on your computer in app-data / net.sourceforge.gemrb
Launch GemRB.
When loading the emulator can be customized. The most relevant:
[Downloads] download the demo version of Baldur's Gate 2 (I haven't tried it myself);
[Additional controls] allow use of the on-screen keyboard and accelerometer;
[Mouse emulation] select the size of the mouse, methods for emulating left and right clicks, use the trackball or joystick, turn on the “magnifying glass” next to the cursor, select the active touchscreen zone;
[Mouse emulation] - it is important! - disable the default “relativistic” mouse control mode. This is when the cursor follows the movement of the finger on the screen anywhere . Personally, it is more convenient for me to indicate his place with one tap :-)
[Remap physical keys] - reassign “hardkey” keys, except Home and Power
A game
On HTC Desire HD (Android Revolution HD firmware) there is one drawback - the obvious one is small size. The button “choose the whole detachment”, the good that has fallen from the defeated adversaries, the lines in the dialogues and other small things have to be whipped with your finger. Thank you, clicking on "Search" highlights the active items. The same factor makes the pause much more active.
Otherwise, nothing to complain about. No departures, no lags, no broken saves. Instead of them - the most beautiful (on the 4.3 "screen it can be seen much better than the 17") graphics, a fascinating story, exemplary music. The battery - to my surprise - eats quite sparingly. However, Desire HD owners have long been philosophically, humbly, stoically for a long time ... :-)
Total
Owning a device with a screen larger than 3.5 "is worth a try - legendary and playable. If your animal does not come out with a diagonal ... well, if you love sabzh and general unpretentiousness, you can take a chance. The presence of" iron "controls makes life much easier.
GemRB is under Maemo. What to iOS - Wikipedia says that work in this direction is underway.
