Blocks hit a dozen

On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal congratulated all the bloggers on the planet with a significant date. According to the publication, since the creation of the first post in the very first blog in the world, exactly 10 years have passed. Many people can argue with this, referring to the vagueness of the definition of “blog” and the spontaneity of this phenomenon, which can hardly be found one source, as well as in rock art, for example. Well, all others can assume that there is a good reason to gather friends to a party without ties.

In fact, even according to the WSJ version, it will only be necessary to congratulate bloggers on December 23. It was on this day, in 1997, that one Jorn Barger wrote on his personal website, Robot Wisdom, the following: “I decided to start my own web page, daily noting the best that I meet while surfing.” This is a format for maintaining a website when one person regularly shares interesting links with readers, providing them with his own comments, and is generally considered canonical for weblogs. The Oxford English Dictionary even claims that it was Barger’s phrase that became the starting point for the term weblog, since the words web and logging are so close to it that the collective unconscious Internet audience could not escape the temptation to put them together.
