Domen.RUS will unite the Russian-speaking population of the planet
The Russian domain registrar Webnames.ru and the Russian-language Internet Center together with the Ukrainian Network Information Center sent a letter to ICANN with a proposal to delegate the root Cyrillic domain. RUS intended for use by the global Russian-speaking community.
The letter addressed to ICANN Chairman of the Board Peter Dengate Trash and ICANN President Rod Beckstrom was handed over to ICANN Representative for Eastern Europe Weni Markowski, Director of Webnames.ru Sergey Sharikov, Director of the Russian-speaking Internet Center Alexey Sozonov and Chairman of the Regulatory Committee of the Ukrainian Network Information Center Yuriy Kargiev ICANN convention in Singapore.
“We support the efforts of ICANN to expand the space of common domains of the first level and are confident that thanks to this the global Russian-speaking community will be able to establish its own top-level domain dedicated to promoting its language, culture and identity using the string.RUS.
The string is the first three characters that begin the first word for Russian. A language spoken by 300 million people living on Earth. For 170 million, Russian is the main language, for 130 million - the second language. Russian Language has official status in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Moldova, Norway, Ukraine, and the USA.
