Nokia N950 (aka Nokia N9 Devkit)

In this post I will try to collect all that is more or less reliably known at the moment about the Nokia N950. Fortunately, after the announcement of N9 and the appearance of official information, the percentage of rumors among this information will be minimal.

The official names are N9 Devkit and N950 .

The main differences between N950 and N9:

• The N950 is not a commercial piece of hardware, intended only for developers, and there is not any guarantee about software / hardware.
• In general, iron is almost identical with N9
• The N950 is slightly larger and has an aluminum casing (the N9 has a polycarbonate)
• N950 has a retractable keyboard (N9 - only touchscreen)
• The N950 has a 4-inch TFT screen (the N9 has a 3.9-inch AMOLED)
• The cameras are slightly different (but both give 8Mp, Calr Zeiss glasses for N9)
• Different location of the front camera (in different angles)
• N950 only supports Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (N9 - Bluetooth 4.0)
• NFC (Near Field Communcations) supported only N9
• The N9 has a slightly more sensitive compass and light sensor.
• The N950 has a 1320mAh battery, the N9 has a 1450mAh

The device will be distributed among the open-source developers of MeeGo (allocated only 250 pieces) and for commercial developers through the Nokia Developer Network (like Nokia Developer Launchpad ) (the number is unknown). The total number of devices released is not yet known.

The software is not Maemo, and not MeeGo in the pure state. This merging of the latest version of Maemo and MeeGo is a lot in common, but also a lot of new. The installation system remained apt / deb, but the MeeGo repositories are also supported (I wonder how this is implemented, but this is what I was assured of). Startup system - upstart. The remaining details about the differences will be later, as information becomes available.

By the way, the MeeGo assembly (possibly in the form in which it currently stands on the N9) will appear on June 22 as a separate release for the N900 called “Summer Release”.

The start date of deliveries to the developers of the N950 is unknown, but the deadline for submitting a request for a device under the MeeGo program is June 28. So what can be expected from the beginning of July.
