Slightly different ICA (XenDesktop HDX and XenApp HDX)

Our clients often ask questions about the ICA access protocol (i.e., correctly speaking, about the set of technologies under the current general name HDX - High Definition eXpierence). And they often wonder if XenApp and XenDesktop products are different in terms of remote access to the application / interface and the virtual machine.

If you look at the product history from Citrix Systems, many people know that it was (and still remains independent) a great product for terminal access Citrix XenApp (it’s also Presentation Server, it’s also MetaFrame server) and there was a great ICA protocol in it. Next, they invented XenDestop (also known as Citrix Desktop Server) and supplied the PortICA protocol, which inherited the ICA stack, received a number of innovations necessary for remote work with the virtual machine console, while losing some of the features that are irrelevant in VDI solutions.

Recently (in April of this year), Citrix supplemented its long-existing table (via pdf link) comparing the functionality of different types of clients, with two columns XD (VDI) and XA, which clearly indicated what additional features are in the implementation of the access protocol for XenDesktop, and what not (or rather, "Not applicable").

The same document contains the functionality of Citrix clients (Citrix Receiver) for various mobile platforms (columns for clients for Windows Phone 7 v.1.0, QNX (PlayBook) v.1.00 and webOS v.1.00 are still empty and marked as “Future”) .

Despite the completeness of this document, when creating virtualization systems for workstations using thin clients, it is necessary to clarify separately whether all the ICA capabilities of the chosen platform will work on this thin client model ... because everything happens in life :)
