The Pentagon wants to get a simulator "cyberwar" to conduct exercises

The United States continues to exert tension around the threat of the so-called "cyberwar". The Pentagon has already announced the creation of a cyber subdivision of the US Army, and also confirmed that an attack from the Internet could be a reason for retaliation by military means . Preparing for future “cyberspaces”, the Pentagon wants to conduct full-scale exercises on the “Internet simulator”.

The Internet simulator is not a joke at all, but part of a large project with a budget of up to $ 30 billion (the exact amount is unknown). According to DARPA officials, this is almost the most important DARPA mission since the space program of the 50s, when this agency was created to respond adequately to the launch of the first Soviet satellite.

About the National Cyber Range (NCR) program became known in 2008 , since then the budget has been developed. Now the development of the simulator seems to be entering the home straight. Information appeared on the contract with the contractor Lockheed Martin (contract amount $ 30.8 million). An alternative project is being done by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory ($ 24.7 million).

The description of the system contains quite general requirements for the simulator: it must duplicate the structure of government, military and commercial networks, as well as emulate "human behavior and weaknesses", including the behavior of people in emergency situations. In the simulator it is planned to work out numerous tests and scenarios for conducting combat operations.

After developing both systems, DARPA will choose the best one. Completely start the project is planned in the middle of 2012.
