Streaming is increasing in the US

In the States, the bill promoted by Amy Kloubchar and John Cornyn, which determines the broadcasting of illegal streaming as criminal, overcame a new and important step. The text was approved by the Senate Law Commission. The Commercial Felony Streaming Act (S. 978) will now be put to the Senate, to a general vote.


As emphasized by The Hollywood Reporter , the Obama administration and the cultural industry coalition support this bill. “ This bill will allow to equate the actions of administrators of such sites to a crime,” said Machael O'Leary, executive vice president of MPAA . This bill allows closing the legal gap between P2P downloads and streaming, which this law defines otherwise.

The text submitted to the commission relates to illegal streaming for commercial purposes. The maximum penalty is up to 5 years in a high-security prison, for distributing 10 broadcasts per semiannual period. The financial profit of each of them should exceed $ 2500 in order to avoid punishment for distributing personal video.
