The
OpenLogic company has developed and posted on its website an interesting java-program called
OpenLogic Discovery , which carefully scans computers under Windows, Linux or Solaris and gives a full report on all the open source components that were found. The sample database contains over 5,000 varieties of the 900 most famous free programs and modules (
list ). Free modules are recognized even if they were not installed individually, but were bundled with other software. Search goes by file name, size, path and checksum. Up to 500 machines can be scanned simultaneously. Results are sent to the central OpenLogic server for verification.
The idea is to demonstrate first of all to corporate customers: you can find thousands of free software samples on almost any corporate network, even if the managers did not know about its existence.
