The military of all countries are united by at least one common feature: the desire for maximum technological excellence of the weapons used. Apart from the trouble-free and simple AK, the bestseller for the “advice” and the workhorse of many wars and conflicts, the weapon in our time is becoming “more independent”. But the army is not the only structure that seeks to put information technology and robotics under the gun. So, on June 28, the American company Taser International announced plans to create robots-police, whose weapons will be paralyzing (shock) guns.
The US Army is already using a PackBot robot, created by iRobot and armed with lethal weapons. But the army is one thing, and “police robots” with powerful stun guns can be used against civilians. And this already entails serious problems. That is why, immediately after the announcement, many US arms manufacturers condemned in the most direct way the desire to equip robots with shock weapons.
The developer of non-lethal weapons Neil Davis (University of Bradford, UK), expresses serious concerns for the health or life of victims of “shock robotherapy”. Since the resulting discharge may be too large (or repeated several times). And the criminal who has received the discharge can not wait for the brave policemen who will arrive at the scene of the incident in order to detain him. The second aspect of the problem is legal. “If someone is attacked by a self-managed robot, then who should be responsible for it?” Whom to sue in the end? ”, Is interested in Steve Wright, security expert at Leeds Central University (UK).
And in fact, I would personally be afraid to go out into the street through which an autonomous police bot drives, or walks, with an electric gun loaded to the eyeballs. But, perhaps, in the root of the condemnation by the “gunsmiths” of such plans of the American company - their lack of such orders themselves. After all, obviously, and the development and production of self-managed robots with stun guns is not a penny affair.
