Liquid battery for electric vehicle

An interesting technology for fast charging of electric vehicles was invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They propose to use a new type of battery with replaceable liquid filler . This battery design is called the SSFC (semi-solid flow cell).

Charging such a battery is possible not only from the mains, but also by changing the filler. That is, just fill in a new liquid - and the battery is again like new. And the waste liquid can be recharged separately from the car, so you will always have energy with you. Storing the charge and discharging the battery is actually carried out in two different physical devices, and this is the main advantage of the new battery design.

The filler is a black liquid, which researchers call “Cambridge oil” (cambridge crude), but it has absolutely nothing to do with real oil. It is a suspension of solid particles, cathodes and anodes (LiCoO 2 and Ketjenblack) stirred in a liquid electrolyte (alkyl carbonate).

Liquid fillers for batteries tried to be invented earlier, but the new substance obtained in MIT possesses about ten times more energy-intensive than its predecessors. In addition, according to the authors of the invention, this liquid in the production should be cheaper than lithium-ion batteries of modern electric vehicles. The scientific work describing the SSFC was published on May 20, 2011 in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.
