HabrEffect.ru: Farewell to users

I am the creator of habreffect.ru. On March 12, 2010, I announced the opening of the service, and the day before yesterday the service was closed . I would like to give a few comments on this subject, as well as provide some statistics.
Of course, our old and recent users are interested in the reasons for the closure of the service, I will try to indicate them below.

Over the past 15 months, we carefully folded uploaded images and gave them with good speed and reliability. Initially, the idea of the service was the support of the authors of the articles, primarily from Habr, but not limited to it. Of course, the idea of the service did not touch the unscrupulous individuals who used the service as they wanted.
During the last 6-7 months moderation of downloaded images was carried out, among which were daily (!) Present: pornography, pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, Nazi motifs, anime and other nastiness (the list is very large - leading it completely, we risk putting you to sleep). Can you imagine how the moderator's mind has changed? =)
The opening of a native image hosting habrastorage.org recently became a joyful event in Habr's life, the need for a third-party service for Habr users has decreased. About habrastorage.org we'll talk more below.
Monetization of the service was not assumed from the very beginning, the project was launched solely on enthusiasm and philanthropy. Services of this kind are monetized by a large number of advertising and premium accounts. It went against our ideology, so the service was watered throughout life. (I’m cursing here: for a short time, one or two AdSense banners were hung, from which 5-10 dollars were earned in total, which remained in AdSense, and the sponsor’s banner hung for one month. But this is not compared to banner clusters our competitors.)
The factors listed above and other factors not mentioned aloud led us to the realization that it was time to close the service and say goodbye to users.
- Occupied space: 59,891,759,874 bytes (55.78 GB)
- Total images loaded: 313,083
- UPD: Loaded images per day: from 20-50 to 600-1400
- Removed during moderation: 89,680 (29%)
- At the moment of images on the server: 223 403
- Active images (from 1 reversal during the month): 53 207 (23.8%)
- Unique visits per month: 60 - 70 thousand
- UPD: Average network load: 30 Mbps
- UPD: Peak evening (or Habra-) load: 200 Mbit / s

We have no right to leave, slamming the door. Of course, all downloaded images that do not violate the rules of the service will remain available for an unlimited amount of time. The main condition for the availability of images - they must be active (from 1 call to them per month).
Now the good news! Yesterday I was contacted by Comrade Boomburum . As a result, we agreed that all the images from the Habreffection used on Habré (in articles and comments) will soon be transferred to habrastorage.org. Thus, you can not worry about the safety of images on the site.
The remaining images will continue to live on habreffect.ru.
