A few months ago, the first information about the compact WiFi router appeared in the form factor of the
Newstweek socket, which replaces packets in open hotspot traffic. For example, changes the texts of news sites.
At first impression, the device was a one hundred percent fake from German comrades or some strange art project. But now they have laid out
detailed instructions on
how to build and configure, and it seems that the device is really real. Judging by the description, it uses special firmware for a cheap Atheros AR2 router, software is written based on the
OpenWrt distribution, and
ARP-spoofing (and
Ettercap ) is used to replace traffic. The “fake router” is managed remotely via
remote.newstweek.com .

Despite this, Newstweek is still an art project. The creators of Newstweek are trying to prove that such devices can be placed everywhere and that a certain “Ministry of Truth” is supposed to be able to control the content that we receive.
