CUPP Computing Introduces Hybrid Netbook

Hybrid in the sense that this notebook, called PunkThis, can work in two modes: economical, which is provided by the ARM-based platform, and productive, based on the x86 architecture. The idea is really good - after all, we rarely use our laptops 100%. And it becomes very unpleasant when, deciding to read the news or send several e-mails, we see that the laptop battery is quickly discharged. And so, you can use the low-power mode, and surf, surf, surf. Well, or communicate, communicate, communicate.

Dual mode of operation is provided through the use of a special ARM-module, which is installed in place of a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive. The configuration of the module is suitable for surfing and performing some office tasks: a TI DM3730 1.0GHz A8 processor, plus 512 MB of RAM, a Mini PCIe SSD. SSD is used instead of the missing hard drive, and such a system works quite well, judging by the feedback from eyewitnesses. Oh yes, the module is also equipped with 5 USB ports, a Wi-Fi module and slots for MicroSD memory cards. One slot is occupied by a card with Android OS system files, the other is used as usual.

This netbook was introduced at Computex 2011 in Taipei. By the way, low-power mode is performed using Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but the normal mode of operation is with Windows 7.

The decision, to be sure, is rather unusual, but it may well be that such a scheme of work will be spread. Yes, the cost of such a netbook (it’s not entirely clear here, whether it is the cost of a module or the entire system) will be about $ 200, and the solution will be released to the market in a couple of months.
