Linus Torvalds did decide on the numbering of the versions of his brainchild. Version 3.0 is already being prepared for release. About five hours ago (at the time of writing this topic), Linus sent the “3.0-rc1” tag to a public git repository, which unequivocally hints that after some time there will be a third version release (according to statistics - just somewhere to my birthday ). So Greg (Kroa-Hartman) will have to fulfill his promise and buy expensive whiskey for Linus.
The only “jamb”, however, is that the development branch is still called “linux-2.6”, but I want to believe that Linus at night was simply not in the mood to shovel the git repository, so he will soon fix this flaw.
You can make sure on the main project site (
www.kernel.org ), and you can watch the progress of events at this address (before renaming the repository):
git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux -2.6.git; a = summaryI would also like to note that, in addition to other “buns,” there will also be updated drivers for ATI Radeon (which it will get from 2.6.39), so that those who are used to the old development scheme, when every even release was considered stable, and the odd one was “unstable” - it would make sense to upgrade. With this update, r600g card holders (g = with free drivers with gallium support) can play with a clear conscience, for example, in Trine, which was in the latest humble-pack.
')
I would also like to note (if suddenly someone was in the cryochamber) that for some time now there is also a remarkable option CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP, which is a rather big step towards eliminating problem 12309, which even became a meme.
UPD : I would also like to note that the principle of even-odd numbers is no longer used (almost from 2002-2003, if memory serves me), so you can safely install each release core.
In the current numbering, the second number in the number will indicate the release number, and the third will be used by the stabilization team to designate “minor” sub-releases of the stable version.
