The contribution of the Internet to the global economy (McKinsey Report)

The research division of the well-known consulting company McKinsey & Co published a report (PDF, 70 p.) On the impact of the Internet on the global economy. This influence is not so small: according to experts, the Internet contributes an average of 3.4% of GDP for all thirteen countries included in the report. Over the past five years, the Internet has provided 21% of the total growth of the world economy, which is associated with an increase in labor productivity, which is provided by the global information infrastructure.

Because of the Internet, many people have lost their jobs (for example, in France alone - 500 thousand people over the past 15 years), but the web business has created an average of 2.4 new jobs for each one destroyed.

The Internet has a positive effect not only on macroeconomics, but also on the income of ordinary citizens. If you calculate what services the World Wide Web provides for free and how much it saves the average person (not even considering downloading pirated movies and TV shows, but only legal services), then in developed countries it goes on average from $ 18 to $ 28 per person per month. This is a savings due to the search for better prices for goods, cheaper communication, education, getting free alternatives to paid information services and quick access to information.

The United States now receives more than 30% of the total income of the global Internet economy and more than 40% of net profit. The inventors of the Internet still control the economic infrastructure and have the most developed and diverse IT economy. However, to make such a conclusion, you do not need to work at McKinsey.

Among the 13 countries, Russia was included in the report, in which experts see great potential. Now the share of the Internet in the Russian economy is only 0.8%. The Russian result is strongly undermined by a large negative balance of foreign trade, that is, the Russian Internet economy is too weakly oriented for export, outsourcing services are not developed, but at the same time, users spend too much on foreign services such as Skype, WoW and eBay. On the other hand, countries such as India and China are very well earned on outsourcing.
