Since over the past 50 years computers have become an integral part of our lives, many musicians composed songs about them.
One of the topics that often stirs our mind is anxiety about the opposition of humanity and smart machines. Can cars actually take over everything that we do, making us unnecessary, obsolete, or, worse, slaves?
In art, this issue was often raised. We tried to make a list of the most famous and memorable songs about computers. ')
We begin, of course, with HAL 9000.
1. HAL 9000 - Daisy (from Space Odyssey 2001 by Stanley Kubrick, 1968)
The guys from IBM taught HAL`a to sing songs. At the beginning of the second part of the film, this seems nice, but by the end of the picture, before HALʻa is destroyed, the impression changes.
2. Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator
Kraftwerk, the pioneers of electronic music from Germany, in their songs tell about the upcoming era of machines. The group has written many songs about computers and about the relationship between man and machine. One of the best songs is “Pocket Calculator”.
3. Gary Numan - Metal
Gary Newman was the first artist who, with his 1979 hit "Cars", helped electronic music get into the charts. I grew up on this album. The song is written on behalf of a computer that grows up enough to understand - it is just a machine and it will never look like a person to anything.
4. Grandaddy - Jed the Humanoid
In the world of Grandaddy, cars are benevolent and naive, which even makes them attractive, as in this song about the sad fate of a homemade robot.
5. Styx - Mr.Roboto
The first thing you say about this clip of Styx - “What the hell was he thinking about?” But you will love this song, this is the most famous song of the 80s about the robot. “Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto. ” Here in all its glory - Mr. Robot, from the 1983 conceptual album “Kilroy was Here.”
6. Radiohead - Paranoid Android
In the world of Tom Yorke, androids are sad - they are offended by people. The Android in this song even denies that it is an android. "Maybe I'm paranoid, but definitely not an android." On the topic of alienation (in the relationship between the car and the man) no one has written a song better yet. “Paranoid Android” is the second song from the 1997 “OK Computer” album.
7. Add N to (X) - Plug Me In
The British Trio explores the aspect of sexual relations between machine and man.
"I have two cars I just stick them They are my best friends. ”
Later, the female voice exclaims: “I just want to feel!” Great song.
8. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The history of the struggle of man against evil machines. “These evil works are programmed to kill us!”
9. Devo - Blockhead
One of Devo's early songs on artificial intelligence. Android Devo is an artificial mutant. Blockhead perfectly characterizes a person who is constantly involved in the same work and performs the same machine functions. Great song.
10. Kraftwerk - Computer Love
The song is about a lonely guy who, on one at least lonely night, decides to make contact with a real girl through a car.
