Recently, AMD has published tests of its new four-core processors, code-named Barcelona. Tests were conducted in SPEC CPU2006. The AMD Opteron Barcelona processor with a clock speed of 2.6 GHz was 21% faster in terms of SPECint_rate2006 and almost 50% in terms of SPECfp_rate2006 than its closest competitor, Intel Xeon 5355 2.66 GHz.

The attentive reader, most likely already noted that AMD can be caught in a certain inadequacy. The fact is that as the opposition Barcelona was chosen not the flagship model Intel Xeon X5365 with a frequency of 3.0 GHz, but only X5355. On the other hand, at the moment AMD has no 2.6 GHz processor ready to enter the market. So far, only models with a frequency of 2.0 GHz.

It is clear that such testing is just a marketing ploy from AMD. But even to some extent, it is fueling interest in the ongoing rivalry of the “silicon” giants. And what will be the real performance of Barcelona chips, which will appear on the market in the near future, will be shown by tests of independent laboratories.
