An example of Red Hat and MySQL has shown that Open Source can be a good source of income, if properly approached. The main developer of the project Mono Miguel de Icaza and his colleagues also decided to go along the beaten track and make some money, in which we all can wish him success. On Monday, he
announced the founding of a commercial company
Xamarin . Here is what they plan to do:
- New commercial embodiment of .NET for iOS
- New commercial embodiment of .NET for Android
- Continuing the development and support of Mono and Moonlight open components. “You can call it International Mono Support,” says Miguel, hinting at his last International Gnome Support project (Helix Code, Ximian)
- Explore the possibilities of using Moonlight for mobile devices and Mac AppStore.
The work of the new company has already begun. First of all, they plan to make a stack for the iPhone, then for Android, and then port the Moonlight to both platforms.
New versions of .NET for iPhone and Android will be compatible with MonoTouch and Mono for Android. Like those versions, they will be distributed as commercial products made over the open core of Mono.
To more accurately formulate a list of directions, Miguel de Icaza asks all interested developers to fill out a
questionnaire . This will help the company to understand what you need to work on first.

Miguel de Icaza recalls that all developers have long discussed and agreed that it is better to develop Mono as a separate company, and not under the wing of Novell. However, after a year of efforts to implement this plan did not work out. Worse, on May 2, 2011, Attachmate (owner of Novell assets) fired the Canadian and American development teams, and a few days later their counterparts in Brazil and Japan. All the MonoTouch and MonoDroid developers and other key Mono developers fell under the staff reduction. Despite this, they still continued to work on the project and provide support, even without receiving a salary.
In this situation, the creation of a new company, perhaps, is the only way out. Miguel de Ikasa says that over the past two weeks they have drawn up an action plan that includes finding venture financing and developing the first commercial projects in order to achieve payback. Thus, you can save the previous command. The money for the first months of work is already there, but the company wants to find venture financing to pay for additional work: the creation of reference manuals, API documentation, a dedicated support line, an upgrade of the bug handling system, training and consulting, and marketing. Previously, the marketing budget for advertising Mono was equal to zero.
More details about the plans of Xamarin will certainly tell at the Boston
Monospace conference in July. Maybe intellectual property issues will become clearer: for sure, something remains with Attachmate.
