How to write a one-page poster for a short presentation at a summer school, seminar or conference

Many summer schools, for example, RuSSIR , are now asked to attach a one-page poster article on the topic of the event to the application ( habratopic recruitment at RuSSIR / EDBT 2011 ). The first thought that comes to mind: “What a horror! I have no scientific results ... What can I write? "

Do not be scared. Indeed, a regular scientific article for a journal should contain new results (although detailed reviews are also very much appreciated), but for a poster the requirements are simpler. A poster can describe some fresh idea, observation, suggestion, or scheme of an unfinished project.

Let us see how the Ural State University student Jacob Rostovchenko coped with this task (a fictional character of a university that no longer exists). The choice of the topic turned out to be a simple matter. After clearing his throat from the smoke of last year's forest fires and listening to his friend, the green activist, Jacob decided to write about forest fires. Since the school is dedicated to databases and information retrieval, it was decided to write about the analysis of fire data.

The formatted name, address of the university, and listing of keywords appeared a few minutes later.

Now you can do the content. After a few hours of a half-random walk through the network, which began with keywords in the search service, an impressive list of resources on this topic settled in the browser bookmarks. Brilliant ideas were already swarming in my head. Since copying links is easier than writing ideas, a list of references quickly appeared under the title.

At this point, it turned out that half of the page is already taken and there is enough space left literally for a couple of paragraphs. I had to be very concise. The first paragraph was spent on a general description of the issues.

Further, the telegraphic style lists the main ideas and links to relevant sources.

At some point, part of the text jumped to the next page, but simple manipulations with fields, line spacing and font size returned the volume to the desired frame.

The application is ready? !!! Oh, and I still have so many ideas ... Fortunately, not only single-page posters accept RuSSIR . Multipage flight of thought can be sent as an application for a conference of young scientists ! In addition to the infinite possibility of self-expression, it almost guarantees a grant covering participation in the school. A couple of days before the deadline still remains ... But this, as they say, is another story.

The file with Jacob's poster can be found here .

Thanks to Rostislav Yavorsky for the material of the article.
