Over the past year, 12% of software developers have lost interest in the Microsoft Windows platform, according to an Evans Data study. At the same time, the number of companies creating applications for the Linux operating system continues to grow.
The survey was conducted among more than 400 companies, IT managers and system integrators involved in the development and implementation of both client and server software in North America. According to the results obtained, over the past year the number of companies developing software for the Windows platform has decreased by 12% and amounted to 64.8% of all developers.
Meanwhile, the number of companies that produce programs for Linux, has increased over the same period by 3%. Last year there were 8.8% of them, and now 11.8% of companies are developing applications for Linux. Experts are confident that the number of such companies will continue to grow and will reach 16% in 2008. Interest in Windows began to fall about two years ago and continues to decline, experts say.
In a research company Evans Data believe that the situation is due to the fact that more and more developers prefer to write under Linux, including versions from Novell and Red Hat, which occupy most of the market. According to John Andrews, executive director of Evans Data, the release of Windows Vista only softened the fall of this platform. If Microsoft had not released it, the numbers would have been more depressing. Mr. Andrews called the release of Windows Vista a kind of compensation for the decline in popularity of this platform among developers. According to experts, in 2008, the market share of Windows will decrease by about 2% - to 63%.

The Windows platform is losing ground because in recent years, the open-source software market has been approaching its mature development stage, Mr. Andrews notes. Nevertheless, the Microsoft platform still occupies a dominant part of the market, and there is no doubt about it. However, no matter how the situation changes in the future, there will always be a place in the world for both operating systems.
Note that the Linux operating system has advantages in non-traditional devices (for example, in portable digital media players). The study also showed an increased interest of developers in creating applications for Unix and Mac OS, but specific figures were not reported.
