Experiment: first schools switch to Linux

An experiment will be launched in St. Petersburg schools: a dozen educational institutions will be equipped with Linux computers by September 1 of this year. However, it is still not clear who will finance this program. Earlier, we recall a number of computers in his school translated into Linux by Alexander Ponosov.
The St. Petersburg Education Committee, which conducted special training seminars for teachers, received interesting information. According to the leading expert of the committee, Igor Bazlov, a number of St. Petersburg schools have shown interest in switching to alternative free software. Basically it was about Linux. Mr. Bazlov reported that the committee went to meet educational institutions. In the autumn, an experimental platform will be created on the basis of these schools where Linux will be introduced. “If the experience gives positive results, the committee will recommend Linux for implementation in all schools,” said Igor Bazlov.

Konstantin Tkhostov, director of the school N 369 in St. Petersburg, believes that in connection with the transition to Linux, problems may arise in the relationship of educational institutions with the city administration committees. “A legal entity, such as a school, works in the system of Gorzakaz, with various administration committees. When installing Linux, this work will be difficult, “- said Mr. Tkhostov. And, nevertheless, he is confident that switching to Linux would be the best gift for schoolchildren by September 1.

Linux INK CEO Leonid Soames said that the process of introducing free software in schools poses a number of problems. "First of all, it is the inertia of the teaching community, expressed in the difficult transition from the usual educational programs to new ones," he said. In his opinion, another problem is the low compatibility of Linux and Windows.

In the meantime, participants in the free software installation experiment are interested in who will be legit OS installed in schools. There is hope for federal funding; the municipal committee on education does not include these amounts in the budget.

Earlier, CNews wrote that Alexander Ponosov intends to conduct a similar experiment at his school. He plans to install on Linux computers in parallel with Windows and from September to begin teaching children to work in an alternative OS. At present, as an experiment, Linux has been installed on five school computers in the village of Sepych. “The school should prepare not the users of a certain system, but people who, after its graduation, will be unprincipled on which OS to work,” says Alexander Ponosov.
