Google asks to put unmanned vehicles on public roads

Google is considered one of the world's leading developers of software-driven cars - they are run by Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun, who in 2005 won the DARPA competition for the best autonomous control system. And then came the moment when the “robots” were ripe for use in the field, that is, on public general roads, surrounded by living human drivers. True, for this you need to change the laws and rules of the road.

The NY Times has learned that Google’s representatives are lobbying for a ban on unmanned vehicles in the state of Nevada.

Speaking in favor of the new bill, Google representatives argue that their cars have already been tested in business: they rolled over 225,000 km in test mode on California roads, including on the main highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. 1600 km passed completely automatically, that is, an employee of Google was in the passenger seat.

Google cars are equipped with a laser rangefinder on the roof, video cameras and sensors, and computers in the trunk are cheating the trajectory of the car in real time. Now in Google's fleet of six unmanned vehicles models Toyota Prius and Audi TT.

Straight trails of deserted deserts of Nevada - the perfect place to test. Drivers who crossed the Death Valley by car, have long been suggesting to the authorities to lift the maximum speed limit, which looks like a mockery on an absolutely straight and level road, where you will not meet a single oncoming car for 100–200 km. So google is about the same. What can I say, if their cars drive even along a difficult route in the parking lot with absolutely no problems (see video).

Voting on the new bill will be held in late June.

It is not yet known how Google is going to make a profit from its new development, but the company is spending a lot of money on lobbying the bill, so some commercial application should be for sure. For example, robotic taxis can carry tourists to a Las Vegas casino, which is located just in the state of Nevada.

Obviously, a robotic car should be much safer than usual. Humanoid drivers annually kill about 265,000 children on the roads, but if a robot injures at least one , riots and protest rallies will probably rise in America (as it is now in Japan against nuclear energy), because people tend to fear everything new and incomprehensible.
