US Department of Homeland Security requires Mozilla to remove the MafiaaFire plugin

The MafiaaFire Redirector plugin, like some other similar extensions, provides a simple redirect for sites whose domains are “confiscated” by the US authorities. Earlier, mass domain confiscations happened to torrent trackers and poker sites .

To the credit of Mozilla, they did not agree to unconditionally fulfill the requirement of the ICE unit of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and asked for legal grounds for blocking the plug-in. Such a reason may be a court decision or order, but in this case nothing like this has been provided.

Moreover, Mozilla sent a letter to DHS with a list of 11 questions regarding the legal eligibility of such actions. Three weeks later, no response from DHS followed, so the questions can be considered rhetorical.

It is a pity that domestic companies do not follow the example of Mozilla, who sometimes prefer to “merge” private information about users without a murmur upon the first request from government agencies, without even trying to figure out the legitimacy of such a request. Perhaps this is the imperfection of Russian laws, and not the fault of the companies, here is a question for lawyers.

Returning to the story of MafiaaFire, one can only thank the US Department of Homeland Security for its PR plug-in, which no one had heard of before. In the end, the department exists on the taxpayers' money, so for the first time he did at least something useful for these same taxpayers. Inspired by the developers even released a version of the plugin for the browser Chrome (the official website MafiaaFire and mirror ).

One can only hope that the US Department of Homeland Security does not hold a grudge against Mozilla and will not confiscate the domain mozilla.org itself.
