Two years ago, the number of Windows application developers has fallen, while the ranks of Linux developers have grown - this is now a trend.
According to analysts from
Evans Data Corporation research house, compared to last year, the share of North American developers writing software for Windows from the total number fell from 74% to 64.8%.
Moreover, the decline in application development for the most common operating system in the world coincides with an increase in attention to the development of software for Linux - over the same period, the percentage of developers of Linux applications grew from 8.8% to 11.8%. Next year, the research team is expecting another drop in interest in the Windows environment, equal to 2%.
John Andrews, president of Evans Data,
said last week that interest in Windows began to get lost 2 years ago. “The data show that this transition is only intensifying. Linux is popularized, but beyond that, we also see similar growth in operating systems for non-standard client devices, ”he said, adding that development priorities for different platforms are changing.

A popular point of view in the IT industry is that modern web browsers are able to run complex applications online and offline, which makes operating systems less important or useless if you want.
Many companies, including Microsoft, are promoting the idea of creating WebOS, with the ability for developers to write applications online.
However, even with a large number of web applications, the situation with the development of desktop applications for Windows looks stable.
The study also showed that despite the huge prevalence of Javascript among scripting languages in the US, Ruby expects a 50% increase in popularity next year.
From the study it can still be noted that a third of North American developers are now working with virtualization, and next year their ranks will be replenished by another 40%.
