Twitter has agreed to purchase TweetDeck. The amount of the transaction, which will be announced in the coming days, will be from 40 to 50 million dollars (part in cash, part of Twitter shares).

TweetDeck is one of the most popular third-party Twitter client applications.
In February, it was reported that TweetDeck was already almost acquired by Bill Gross UberMedia for
25-30 million dollars. The deal was almost done when Twitter quickly made a counter offer.
Most sources believe that this deal is defensive for Twitter. Twitter simply could not allow UberMedia to have such a large share in this market. UberMedia has already acquired UberTwitter, Echofon and a number of other Twitter-related startups. Adding TweetDeck to UberMedia products would give the company too much leverage on Twitter.
Therefore, Twitter decided to make such a defensive proposal to disrupt the deal. Which, apparently, succeeded.
