The new DVD-RW will hold 8.5 GB on one side.

8.5 GB single-sided DVD-RW
Despite the fact that Blu-ray and HD DVD are slowly but surely sneaking into the wallets of an increasing number of citizens, promising such charms as high-quality video and audio, good old DVD-technologies do not lose ground.

This is happening not without effort by Victor (known as JVC), which has released a unique DVD of its kind.

The uniqueness of the discs lies in the fact that the new DVD-RW does not hold 4.7 GB, as usual, but almost twice as much - 8.5 “fair” gigabytes. And all this is on one double-sided side. Until now, such a volume has been available only on double-sided DVD-RW discs or single-sided dual-layer DVD-R. Now, thanks to the Japanese comrades from Victor, we can hope for the emergence of 17-gigabyte DVD discs (two sides with two layers on each). The manufacturer itself does not say anything about this topic yet, but it is not difficult to predict the direction of its further actions.

However, the question of the compatibility of new discs with modern “cutters” also remains open. So we will wait for details.
