Icons, pictograms and mini illustrations: where is the line between them?

I have long been interested in the question of terminology in icon business. How, for example, do icons differ from icons ? I heard somewhere that icons are pictograms that are optimized for screen display (size, resolution, color depth). And what about a specific example?


For the site of the Norwegian financial group Storebrand, a huge effort was made by designers from the studio TurboMilk to draw a set of over fifty “icons”. I used quotes because there is no complete clarity of what it is and how to call it correctly.

It seems to me that it all turned out icons. Here are the signs of iconography I see:

• Fixed size - all images are used in size 128x128
• "Common" color palette
• Single "language" of metaphors in the set
• Compliant perspective and common perspectives
