In Finland, Sony called for compensation for the removal of the OtherOS function from the PS3

An interesting way to influence Sony was found by the Finns. One of the owners of the PlayStation 3, dissatisfied with the disappearance of the possibility to run your favorite console on your favorite console, complained about the manufacturer to the local consumer protection organization (Consumer Complaints Board, in Finnish Kuluttajariitalautakunta :). Arguments in the complaint are simple and clear. By installing the notorious firmware 3.21 , the consumer was deprived of some of the functionality promised by the manufacturer upon purchase. On the other hand, if you do not update the firmware, the consumer will be deprived of other goodies, for example, he will not be able to play some new games. Not to mention the bug fixes.

Comrade demanded compensation of € 150 (and he bought the console last year for € 268.90 ). Consumer Complaints Board considered the case and acknowledged that the removal of OtherOS does deprive the product of some of the consumer properties claimed by the manufacturer at the time of purchase. The consumer deserves compensation in the amount of 100 euros , which must be paid by the manufacturer and the retailer together.

Although the decisions of this organization are advisory in nature and do not have legal force themselves, but in such cases the Finnish courts are guided by them. The case has not yet come to trial, unlike in America, but let's see what happens next.

The most interesting thing in my opinion is that according to these figures it turns out that the use value of the OtherOS function is 37%, that is, more than a third of the cost of the console .
