ESA does not consider the recent hacking of its network critical

The other day, the European Space Agency confirmed the hacking of its network by the hacker TinKode. True, the agency claims that the hacker failed to hack critical resources, the main site and the agency’s internal network remained intact. On Saturday, TinKode published the data that he managed to obtain - this is the admin account, data of public FTP servers, email and Apache configuration files of one of the servers. As it turned out, the scientific data exchange system between the ESA and partners was attacked, and the agency’s internal network really remained untouched.

After the attack, the ESA disconnected its FTP, then changing all account data. Users whose data fell into the hands of a hacker were notified of the attack, and received new login information. In addition, users were once again asked not to use the same data for all their accounts in the ESA system (for example, access to FTP, email data, etc.).

Now ESA is going to strengthen security measures, which will protect the agency’s internal network from any attacks. Representatives of the agency noticed that they were concerned about what had happened, and they were going to take all the necessary measures to prevent anything like that from happening anymore, despite the fact that the hacker could not cause serious damage.

The scientific activity of the agency continues, nothing has really changed. It is worth noting that the ESA does not report anything about the technical details of the attack - so far it is not clear how the hacker could gain access to all the data mentioned above. In addition, the motives of TinKode, which was previously seen in other hacking actions, are also unknown (for example, he also launched an attack on the site of the British naval forces last year).
