Nanofootball

Within the framework of the annual world soccer championship among robots, Robocup will be the first to hold competitions between subminiature robots. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) participates in their organization. This year the competitions will be held outside the main program of the championship, but in 2008 it is planned to organize a corresponding robofball league.

Competitions will be held on a chip with sixteen "fields" measuring 2.5 x 2.5 mm. Instead of a ball, a disk of silicon dioxide with a diameter of 100 microns will be used, and player robots are microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) 250-300 microns long and with a mass measured in nanograms (by weight, robots are classified as nanodevices). Nanochamping program consists of three types. In the first, the robot must score a goal on an empty field as quickly as possible. In the second type of competition it is also necessary to score a goal, but already on the field with obstacles - “defenders”. Finally, in the third type of program you need to score as many goals as possible in three minutes. Ball

This year, five teams participate in the competition: two from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) and one each from the US Navy Academy in Annapolis, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University. Simon Fraser (Burnaby, Canada). For the manufacture of robots used a variety of materials from silicon oxide and aluminum to gold and nickel.
