Try Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

Today I installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Beta 1, in order to see what Canonical has done and fix the bugs that are specific to my configuration. As a result, I spent half a day trying to somehow sort out Unity, but I lacked intelligence: somehow I found the system settings, cleverly hidden under the shutdown icon, and I did not find a way to mount FTP, which was done in Gnome elementary, in two clique. UserInterfaceFreeze is long gone, and I don’t have to hope for improvement in the next six months, so I put off familiarity with Unity until later, and returned to Ubuntu Classic.

But since the installation is a test one, why not experiment, considering that the long-awaited release of Gnome 3 took place just a few days ago?

All actions listed below are done at your own risk, PPA Gnome 3 is currently considered unstable, as is the Beta version of Ubuntu. In my case, all the manipulations went smoothly.

After installing Gnome 3, Ubuntu Unity and Ubuntu Classic can lose their performance, in my case, after removing Gnome 3, my performance has been restored.

Installing Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

Installation is simple to disgrace. Open the terminal, and execute the following commands:

Adding a Gnome 3 PPA Repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

Update the list of packages
 sudo apt-get update

We update the system with the ability to install packages
 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Reboot, select the Gnome Shell Session, and voila! Gnome shell is extremely simple and intuitive, I see no reason to explain where to click, and what to do.

Uninstall Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

If Gnome 3 gave you the same feeling as Unity with me, getting rid of it is as easy as installing it. To do this, run the terminal, and sequentially execute the following commands:

Install the utility to get rid of PPA-repositories and their contents
 sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

Getting rid of Gnome 3
 sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

Reboot and return to Ubuntu Unity or Ubuntu Classic.
