The
message on the Ubuntu developer mailing list states that the current state of Unity will be brought up for discussion and, if necessary, the classic GNOME desktop can be left in Ubuntu 11.04 by default.
Here is a quote from this mailing list:
* Default GNOME Classic Desktop (dmandell)
* Event: rickspencer3 will raise a status topic in the -desktop list for public viewing and discussion
The reason for this are some functional regressions, such as usability issues: it is difficult to find the settings, the behavior of the launch pad buttons, but, most importantly, a very bad Unity / Compiz state at this stage.

In fact, if you look at the discussion of developers in
another thread (see the topic “Default Desktop Experience for 11.04”), then everyone expresses his opinion on the current state of Unity. While most people seem to agree that Unity should be by default at 11.04:
“I can honestly say that when I’m not in Unity, I don’t feel at home. I rush back and forth between Ubuntu and OSX, and when the NVIDIA drivers were inoperative, and when I was in OSX, I often found myself trying to move the mouse with my fingers to the position 0.0, clicking the Super button, look for the inherent Unity elements which very quickly * well * has established itself as a natural part of my work and I can no longer imagine working without Unity.

From myself I will add that I was updated on 11.04 even when it was alpha. Unity then very, very often fell. I even wrote myself a start_compiz script (
DISPLAY =: 0 compiz --replace --debug >> ./compiz_debug.log & ). Fortunately, Apport, kindly offers to report about the errors found by them and upload them on the launchpad.net bug tracker. It's nice that sometimes unity updates are sometimes released three times a day (or even more often). Now the frequency of crashes has become less, but they still exist, besides, a bug with an unresponsive launch pad sometimes gets it. But I want to believe that this miracle plugin Compiz still bring to mind - it is very convenient!
Well, at this “late time” (11.04 Ubuntu will be released in less than a month, in 20 days) it’s hard to predict what will happen: it’s probably too late to fix
all Unity errors, but too late to go back to classic GNOME desktop. What do you think?
