Director of the Linux Foundation: no need to offend Microsoft

Linus Torvalds began developing the core of the operating system in April 1991, exactly twenty years have passed since the battle is over, Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said in an interview for the upcoming anniversary .

With the exception of desktops only, Linux has already become a leader in all markets, including servers, mobile systems, supercomputers, and so on. "I think we no longer need to fear Microsoft so much," says Zemlin. “They used to be a serious contender, but now it's like kicking a puppy.”

Microsoft shares have stagnated lately, which is particularly evident against the background of Red Hat shares, which are growing like yeast.

According to Zemlin, it is good to look back on the eve of the anniversary and assess what path Linux has traveled in these twenty years. It all started with a modest little student project from Helsinki, and now Linux provides 70% of global stock trading and the lion’s share of traffic on the Internet, whether it's Facebook, Google or Amazon.

Linux works in consumer electronics devices, such as Sony TVs and camcorders, Amazon Kindle tablets, Android smartphones. A free OS is used everywhere: from miniature embedded microcontrollers to giant supercomputers, where Linux leadership is phenomenal: more than 90% of systems from the Top 500 list work under Linux.

Linux dominates all categories of computing devices, with the exception of desktop computers. This is the last bastion of Microsoft, where it still controls about 90% of the park, the rest is shared by Mac and Linux. According to Zemlin, the failure of Linux on desktops was "a disappointment for many." But the good news is that the role of the OS on desktops is gradually moving to the browser, and traditional PCs are gradually losing their importance, and areas where Microsoft has no market (smartphones and tablets) are coming to the fore. Now many people work more with smartphones than with ordinary PCs.

However, a recent IDC report said that Windows Phone, due to a deal with Nokia, could become one of the leaders in the smartphone market and overtake Apple by 2015. When Zemlyan was asked this question, for a few seconds he lost the ability to speak because of hysterical laughter: “Oh my God, Steve Jobs, you need to short Apple shares!” He finally joked.

As for competition with the iPad in the tablet market, Jim Zemlin said that “Apple is your worst enemy and best friend if you are in an open source camp. This company has done a lot of good things for open source and for Linux, they include many open source components in their products and generally work well with our community. But at the same time, no one will argue that they themselves have a closed system. ”

Officially, Linux’s birthday is August 25, 1991 ( first announcement ) or October 5, 1991 ( first code ). Fans of open OS celebrate both dates.

The Linux Foundation organization unites almost all the major IT companies in the world, except Microsoft.
