Today it became known that Canonical decided to completely get rid of the Gnome shell. Starting with version 11.10 of Oneiric Ocelot, you will not find Classic Ubuntu Desktop in the choice of environments. Only Unity will remain.

This was said by the head of the company Mark Shuttleworth. At Launchpad, he wrote this comment :

We have made great progress in Natty, but we lack a new goal. We will make Unity the main environment in Oneiric. This is normal because Classic Desktop is backed up by Natty, but Oneiric will not.

Let me remind you that the Gnome Classic environment stands at the origins of creating Ubuntu. It was Gnome 2.8 that became the shell of Ubuntu 4.10 Warty Warthog (Warthog) and kept to version 10.10.
