50% of Americans do not know where New York is and do not want to know

The Washington Post newspaper brought unique results of research conducted under the auspices of National Geographic magazine, whose employees decided to find out how well the younger generation of Americans knows geography. As a result of a survey conducted in early 2006, it turned out that this knowledge is very superficial. So, 9 out of 10 Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 have no idea about the whereabouts of Afghanistan. This is despite the fact that after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, American forces overthrew the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. And 63% of the US population does not know where Iraq is.

75% will not be able to find on the map Israel, Lebanon and Iran - the countries that newspapers write about daily in connection with the situation in the Middle East and Tehran’s nuclear policy.

But all of these flowers are compared with the fact that half of the respondents have no idea where they are ... New York. And 57% of young Americans will not be able to find on the map the state of Ohio, where the four US presidents come from.

It is also interesting that 29% could not find the Pacific Ocean on the globe ...

The smallest difficulties for survey participants were caused by China’s geographical position - 69 percent of respondents were able to find this country on the world map. True, 75% of them said that the official language in China is English, and two-thirds believe that it is not the United States, but China is the world's largest exporter of goods and services.

Curious and the fact that young Americans do not hesitate to white spots on their world map. They believe that knowing where Iraq and Iran are, whose names are so often heard in news releases, is not that important. Let's say. But how then to be with New York and the Pacific?

However, 47 percent of young people admitted that it would be nice to own any foreign languages.

And yet you can be happy for the youth of the United States. Indeed, in the course of a similar survey in 2002, every tenth respondent could not find on the map ... his own country.
