A team of surgeons from Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto decided to use gaming technology to save time and avoid contamination in the operating room.
Doctors began using Microsoft's Xbox Kinect to manipulate medical images during operations. With this technology, surgeons use gestures to zoom in and out and capture various images without leaving the operating room.
It is worth noting that in order to view MRI or CT scans on a computer, doctors usually have to leave the sterile operating room. According to Dr. Calvin Lowe, every time surgeons leave the operating room to analyze a picture, they lose 20 minutes. To enter the operating room, they must be thoroughly disinfected to avoid contamination.

Lowe, who works as an oncologist surgeon, promoted the use of Kinect for the operating room. In addition to saving time, the technology also helps surgeons stay focused and reduce the risk of infection.
It would be interesting to note that the idea of integrating technology into the operating room came from engineers - Jamie Tremaine, Greg Bridley and Matt Strickland. The latter is also a resident surgeon working at the University of Toronto. He was the first to decide to do something to help surgeons save time when viewing images during surgery.
The console represents a spatial scanner, being able to see and analyze.
3D environment. It generates a digital skeleton of a user, captured on a camera, and then tracks the movements of the skeleton. After this movement is transferred to the team.
Surgeons have already tested a new technology in 6 operations. According to Low, the team plans to use gesture control technology in other parts of the hospital, CJAD reports.
