A slice of "cloud" for business

When we pay for light, water, gas, do we wonder where all these benefits come from? Not. And it is natural. It is important for us that the light be, and where it comes from - we are not interested, we need a resource.

The concept of cloud computing has a similar scheme, it is to look at IT from the business side, to get the most transparency of IT resources, to abstract from the perception of IT as a “pile of hot and dusty iron”. It was the same habromenment when it is necessary to mention the principal features of the technology - abstraction. When we abstract from the specific server model, from the specific hardware in its configuration, we gain the freedom to work on any hardware (of course, remember that we will not get rid of the type of processor architecture).

But to abstract from a specific data storage system or to virtualize it is no longer such a trivial task. This task can be solved in different ways:
1) Buying a new storage system and disk space of the desired amount.
2) Upgrade existing storage systems to a unified virtual platform.
')
This is where NetApp features are worth mentioning. Firstly, all NetApp systems solve the problem of virtualization of storage systems - after all, we get a logical volume on top of the N-number of hard drives. In fact, we don’t know on which disk which bit is on - that’s not important to us. The important thing is that we can stretch this volume depending on our tasks, scale it in any direction - it will still remain for us 1 logical substance with which we will work. Such a solution will easily satisfy the solution of the first problem. But what to do with the second? ..

To solve the second problem, we can use V-Series products - this will allow us to use existing storage systems regardless of their manufacturer and supplement their functionality with virtualization of the array itself - we will get the same 1 logical volume. In some cases, disk shelves from a specific vendor are specially taken and are complemented by V-Series controllers - as a result, we can get a certain synergistic effect: high performance of disk shelves multiplied by NetApp capabilities, and not only virtualization of the storage system. making Snapshot and SnapClone, as well as many other goodies ...

For the "cloud" solutions is very important "rubber" of all entities of the system - including data storage systems. In this regard, the solutions from NetApp architecturally have a very big plus when choosing a storage system for the "cloud", not to mention the multitude of plug-ins and huge support for cloud platforms such as Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware ESX / ESXi.

Tip-up for the day: When designing cloud solutions, pay special attention to disk space virtualization — consider systems with native support for virtualization, which are essentially sharpened under “clouds” —and solutions from NetApp are a great choice.
