The New York Times cuts back on free viewing.

Earlier on Habré there was already news that the electronic version of the New York Times is becoming paid for everyone except subscribers to the print edition. Later there was news that the restriction on viewing free content is removed very easily - just a few lines of code. I don’t know if the problem has been fixed with the code, but the New York Times is cutting back on the possibility of free viewing of content when entering the site from search engines and social networks.

Previously it was announced that the restriction does not apply to users who visit the site of the publication through links from search engines and social networks. Apparently, there were a lot of fans of free reading (in a hurry, even browser extensions were created that allowed to emulate the transition to New York Times articles from search engines and social networks), since the publication announced the introduction of a limit on free viewing of articles and news on its website. However, so far the restriction is imposed only on users who visit the site of the publication from Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines, for users who come to the site from social networks, there are no restrictions yet.

For "search" users, a limit is imposed on five free articles or news. Why restrictions have been introduced for other search services, no comments yet. But it seems that the explanation is already quite understandable - so many users probably began to come to the site from search services.

By the way, Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln brand offers readers the possibility of free access to the publication, but you still have to pay for the pleasure - in this case, readers will admire the abundance of advertising of this brand. But for those who do not want or cannot pay, this is still an acceptable option.

In any case, the New York Times has ceased to provide free content, so that if such a monetization of the resource is successful, other publications can switch to this scheme.
