WhisperCore encrypts data on Android

Whisper Systems today began offering a WhisperCore application that encrypts data on the hard disk for Android devices. WhisperCore is free for individual use.
The application includes full disk encryption for all data stored on the device and allows you to encrypt SD cards, said Moxy Marlinspike, co-founder and chief technology officer of Whisper Systems.

So far, the beta version is limited and comes only with the Nexus S, but will soon be shipped with other devices, Moxy Marlinspike said.

As soon as the application is installed on the phone, the user sets a password, which is used to generate a key with which all data on the disk is encrypted.

“If a device is lost or stolen, the data will be completely inaccessible,” Marlinspike said, adding that his goal is “to develop a system that will turn these devices into secure, enterprise-class devices.”

Some mobile security services offer remote wipe of information on a lost or stolen device, but, as a rule, files remain on the device and can be restored with the help of special programs, even if they have been erased. Using disk encryption, files cannot be accessed without a password.

"WhisperCore uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with a 256-bit key in XTS mode, with the same encryption protocol, some applications on a PC, such as TrueCrypt or LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup), work."

Marlinspike said he believes WhisperCore is the first free hard disk encryption application for Android devices. Sophos (a manufacturer of information security products for desktops, servers, mail systems and network gateways) said they plan to start selling software that includes disk encryption for smartphones this year. And RIM suggests enabling WhisperCore for BlackBerry devices.
