SSD is still very expensive with very limited volume. And from the traditional drive you want speed.
An interesting compromise was
proposed by HighPoint Technology: a PCI controller, to which both HDD and SSD are connected simultaneously. All read / write operations go through the SSD. But at the same time the entire amount of HDD is available. It is argued that this bundle works at 80% speed "clean" SSD.
As far as I understand, the SSD volume should be 1/4 of the HDD volume, and this, of course, is a significant limitation. It works only under Windows Vista / 7 (and, I suppose, W2k8). However, in many cases, a 1 terabyte fast hard drive will be very useful. For example, high load database.

From my experience at work, I can say that the super-fast RamSan from TMS for 2 TB costs more than $ 50k. Savings, however, it turns out.
Price controller $ 110 in the states. Thus, the whole bundle for 1 TB will cost an average of 110 + 500 + 90 = $ 700. This is 3 times cheaper than a pure SSD of this size, recruited from four drives.
