Post office in Sweden and Denmark switches to digital stamps

In Denmark and Sweden they are preparing to introduce a new payment system for postal letters, so it will be possible to send them even in a self-made envelope without a stamp. Payment for shipment is received via SMS (“porto” message to the short number 1900), after which a digital code arrives - it needs to be printed in the place where the mark is usually located.

If you send not a letter, but a parcel post, parcel or postcard that does not fit into the printer, you can print the code on a separate piece of paper, cut it with scissors and stick it on the parcel instead of the stamp.

The risk of forgery in this case is no more than with ordinary stamps; they are confident in the postal department, because in both cases the letter must pass through a scanner that verifies the authenticity of the code.

The code consists of twelve characters in three rows, said Anders Åberg, director of marketing for the Swedish-Danish postal association, in an interview with the Sydsvenskan newspaper. According to the marketer, they can implement the system no earlier than the summer of this year. At the same time, the cost of postage with digital and ordinary stamps will be the same.

As in all countries of the world, paper mail in Denmark is rapidly becoming more expensive due to a drastic decrease in turnover. Shipping ordinary letters will rise by the end of the year from the current 5.5 crowns to as much as 8 crowns ($ 1.48 at the current rate). Over the past two years, the number of letters in Denmark has decreased by 20%. Young people do not like to write by hand, preferring electronic devices.

Digital stamps and payment by SMS will help to make outdated technology "snail letters" a little clearer for the younger generation.
